The National Roads Authority has introduced a customer friendly toll payment system (eToll) which commenced operation nationwide on Friday 15th June, 2007.

What is eToll?
eToll is the Irish symbol for electronic tolling. Electronic tolling allows motorists to use electronic tolling lanes, thereby saving time and availing of user friendly payment methods.

How does electronic tolling work?
Electronic tolling uses a small electronic tag which is placed in the vehicle and is detected each time the vehicle passes through the plaza. The toll is then debited to the customers account. The electronic tolling system will automatically recognise the correct toll for the class of vehicle you are driving.

Where can I get an electronic tag?
There are a number of companies in Ireland providing electronic tags to motorists. See below for a list of electronic tag providers from which you can choose a service offering that suits you.

What does interoperability mean?
These providers use the eToll Interoperability system which means a driver will only need one tag for all tolling facilities in Ireland. We recommend that only one tag should be installed in each vehicle.

Based on the pilot programme we are expecting an approximate 98% success rate, but there will be difficulty if a tag is faulty or its placement within a car is incorrect. Please refer to the issuers instructions regarding placement of the tag and if there is any difficulty with the electronic tag please contact the tag issuer.

Drivers with more then one tag need to be aware that only one tag will be read through random selection. Therefore it is advised that drivers choose a preferred tag to be placed properly within their car.
