ENR SRO4: Effective asset management meeting future challenges

The ERA-NET ROAD project has just announced a Programme Call, entitled "Effective asset management meeting future challenges ". The call opened on Friday 29 January 2010 and closes at 13:00 (CET) on 12 March 2010.

The participating national road administrations in this cross-border funded Joint Research Programme are Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. To manage this programme, a Programme Executive Board (PEB) has been established, with the Danish road Directorate (DRD) as the Programme Leader (PL) and Programme Executive Chair (PEC). The NRA, as one of the 13 participating administrations, are keen to encourage Irish bodies to submit research proposals to this programme so that Irish interests are included in the research programme.

The aim of the programme is to improve the management of the European road network by identifying and developing methods and procedures which optimise performance from a technical, economic and sustainability point of view. The management of a road network involves a wide range of areas including engineering, economics, social development, civil engineering, traffic management, safety, information technology, and many more. It is important that a holistic approach is adopted encompassing the whole service life “from cradle to grave” in order to maximise the potential benefits of these important national assets. The programme is based on the following four topics which are described in more detail in the Description of Research Needs (see below):

A: Meeting stakeholders’ requirements and expectations
B: Understanding asset performance
C: Development of suitable KPIs for the future
D: Framework for optimised asset management

The EUR 2.85 million budget for this 2½ year Joint Research Programme is jointly funded by all 13 funding participants of the Programme Executive Board. It is expected that ten to fifteen projects will be funded in the programme.

The call for proposal is now open!  Please download the Description of Research Needs (DoRN), Guide for Applicants and the Application Form to obtain full details of the application criteria, budget and procedure for submissions. The deadline for submission is the 12th of March 2010, 13:00 CET.

Applicants must comply with all terms of the full text and be submitted on the form provided.

For further information on topics of particular interest to the NRA, please contact Tom Casey (tcasey@nra.ie).
